Greenery
Branches from a silk ficus tree were stapled to
the walls in places where they were less likely
to collect droppings

I
purchased a variety of silk/plastic greenery from Michael's
and Hobby Lobby. The majority of the greenery is draped outside
of the aviary, where it will not get soiled. Some greenery is
also hung inside the aviary. Much of this is placed strategically
where the leaves will not collect droppings. However, I have
considered putting some bouquet-style greenery inside the aviary,
where the birds can actually take cover inside. It is my hope
that I can swap out these bouquets on a regular basis and wash
them in the washing machine or dishwasher. However, I am not
sure how well they will hold up under those conditions.
Live
plants are another option. If you decide to place live plants
in the aviary, make sure to check the safe
and toxic
plants for birds lists, first. Also, be aware that potting soils
may contain fertilizers or other chemicals that may not be good
for your birds. One nice recommendation is to cover the surface
of the soil with pebbles or pea gravel, so the birds cannot
access the soil directly.
I
would like to place live plants in hanging baskets within the
aviary, but I am afraid of the birds using them as makeshift
nests. So, until I have a true same-sex aviary, no hanging baskets
for me.
